Sandra Madrid is Assistant Dean
for Students and Community
Development at the University of
Washington School of Law.
She
received her B.A. from the
University of Southern Colorado;
M.A. and Ph.D. from the
University of Washington. Prior
to assuming her present position
in 1989, she served as Director
of the Instructional Center and
the Early Identification Program
in the University of
Washington's Office of Minority
Affairs. Her responsibilities in
her current position include
overseeing student recruitment,
admissions and financial aid.
She also serves as Director of
Staff Personnel and Dean of
Students.
Dean
Madrid is currently a member of
the National Board of Directors
of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.;
Chair of the Board of Directors
of the National Hispana
Leadership Institute; Chair of
the Board of Directors of the
United Way of King County; and
serves on the Board of the YWCA
of Seattle and King/Snohomish
Counties. She also serves on the
Judicial Screening Committee of
the King County Bar Association,
the Northwest Minority Job Fair
Advisory Board, the Puget Sound
Minority Clerkship Advisory
Board, Western Washington
University's Law and Ethnic
Diversity Program Advisory Board,
and the Washington State
Minority and Justice Commission.
She recently accepted a
nomination to serve on the
American Association of Law
School Minority Group Section’s
Executive Committee.
Some of
her awards include the King
County Bar Association's
Champion of Diversity Award
(2003); the Commission on
Minorities in the Profession of
the American Bar Association's
Spirit of Excellence Award
(1997); the King County Bar
Association's Outstanding Non-Lawyer
Award (1995); and the Washington
State Bar Association
Affirmative Action Award (1993).
She is
also the recipient of the
Washington State Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce Community
Leadership Award, Nordstrom
Community Service Award, and the
Edward Carlson Outstanding
Alumni Award from Leadership
Tomorrow. She has been profiled
in Hispanic Outlook in Higher
Education as one of "20 Trail-Blazing
Mujeres: Elite Cadre in Higher
Education" (February 23, 2004);
Latino Northwest Magazine (October/November
2002); recognized as one of 80
elite Hispanic women in Hispanic
Business (April 2002); and
featured in an article, "Coping
with Color Blindness," in
Washington Law & Politics (April/May
2002). Public service is a
passion for Dean Madrid, having
served on over 40 boards and
committees
since 1990.
