Congresswoman Kay
Granger
12th District of Texas
Biography
Congresswoman Kay
Granger is the only
Republican woman serving
in the U.S. House of
Representatives from
Texas and is a member of
House of Representatives
leadership team. Long
active in local, state
and national government
as well as civic affairs,
Granger is recognized
for her energetic and
sensible leadership. |
|
Granger’s emphasis on
the plight of families
led her to spearhead an
initiative with other
members of Congress to
present new ways that
the government can step
in—or step out—to help
working parents and
their children. The
result was her American
Families Agenda, which
features several pieces
of legislation designed
to help families deal
with today’s challenges.
Some examples of these
solutions are: 1)
allowing employees to
convert their overtime
into paid time off, 2)
reducing the burden of
college tuition, and 3)
cracking down on child
predators and gangs.
As part of her work to
help families, Granger
has been a tireless
advocate for solutions
to the energy crisis
that has burdened
Americans with high gas
prices and high food
prices.
Granger stepped into a
national leadership role
in the war on terrorism
based on her work with
Iraqi women. In the
course of three
congressional delegation
visits over two years to
the Middle East, she
worked with and mentored
Iraqi women who now
either hold elected
positions or are leaders
in their communities.
She also co-chairs the
Iraqi Women’s Caucus.
Granger sits on the
Appropriations Committee
and serves on the
Defense, Homeland
Security and Military
Construction/Veterans
Affairs Appropriations
Subcommittees.
Granger received
Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld’s first
Global War on Terrorism
Coin for her unwavering
support of anti-terrorist
efforts, the 2006
National Association of
Community Health Centers
Community Health
Defender Award and the
National Association of
Manufacturers Award for
her pro-growth, pro-manufacturing,
pro-worker voting
record. She has been
inducted into the Texas
Women’s Hall of Fame and
the Fort Worth Business
Hall of Fame and is the
recipient of the Fort
Worth and Tarrant County
Region of the National
Conference of Community
and Justice’s 2006
Brotherhood/Sisterhood
Citation.
Before coming to
Congress, Granger served
as Mayor of Fort Worth
for three terms and a
member of the City
Council for two years.
She owned and operated a
successful insurance
agency for over 20 years
and is a former teacher.
Granger published her
first book, “What’s
Right About America,” in
2006. The book praises
American values and how,
as Americans, we live
out those values.
She is also a member of
the First United
Methodist Church, and
has three grown children,
five grandchildren.
