Carmen Luisa Coya-van Duijn is a media relation consultant with over 20 years of experience serving in the arenas like Public Relations, Broadcast TV & Radio production. Coya has collaborated on projects for clients such as MTV Networks (Latin, North American and Europe), P&G, Coca Cola, Ebony Magazine, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, Atlanta Visitor’s Convention Bureau, National Society of High School Scholars, United States Tennis Association. Prior to launching Effective Media Group in 2006, Carmen served as Public Relations Specialist for AARP State of Florida based in their Miami office. She collaborated with the national launch of “Segunda Juventud,” AARP’s first Spanish publication and produced AARP Florida’s first 30-minute weekly television show, which aired on PBS. Carmen’s media experience includes serving as one of the launch producers for MTV.
Carmen’s community involvement has been showcased in active roles within Atlanta and the state of Georgia. She played the leading role in Latinos for Kasim for the winning Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed in 2009. Her media outreach in the Hispanic community for the 2010 US Census for the City of Atlanta helped boost their numbers. She also works alongside of Drop Dead Gorgeous, a 501c3 that drives awareness on the issue of commercial sexual exploitation of children. Carmen’s passion for the fight against child sex trafficking earned her a seat on the Governor’s Task Force for the state of Georgia to fight this crime in 2010. Her work in the fight against human trafficking has earned her a place as a spokesperson for the cause and has been noted as a guest speaker from coast to coast. She also represents Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr, as her public relations person of choice and her firm (EMC) serves as the P.R. firm of record for The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center). This great honor has allowed her client to expand her reach globally as well as increase strategic partnership building. Carmen’s work with Claes Nobel of the Nobel Peace Prize family has provided her the opportunity to help students reach their fullest academic potential by connecting them with top universities as well as instructing them on veins of academic funding. Her work with Liberty University Online in Espanol was key, both in the academic side and the public relations side. She helped with their launch and media strategies as well as personally worked on translating several of their courses in Spanish.
Carmen received her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Florida International University. She also has earned her Master’s in Arts and Religion in T h eology from Liberty University as well as her Master’s in Divinity in Theological Studies. Currently she is pursuing her Canonical degree at the Domuni University in Brussels, Belgium. Ultimately her goal is to earn her Doctorates in Ecumenism from The Angelicum, St. Thomas Aquinas University ( a Pontifical University in Rome, Italy). Coya is a member of GALAJ (Georgia Association of Latin American Journalists), National Latina Business Women Association, GALEO (Georgia Association of Elected Latino Officials), National Academy of the Arts and Sciences, serves on the communication council for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and past member of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She is fluent in both English and Spanish. She has proficiency in Portuguese, French and Italian. Working knowledge in Greek and Hebrew. Currently learning Dutch. She is a mother of two and happily married to PFC Remco P. W. van Duijn, born Dutch sworn American serving in the U.S. Army National Guard.
